Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars get point, but fall in overtime to Mount Royal

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team pushed defending national champions Mount Royal to overtime, but MRU's Kiana McNinch scored the game-winning goal to give the visitors a 3-2 win on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, the Cougars got on the board first when rookie Alexis VanNetten passed it out to Paige Hubbard in the slot. Hubbard couldn't control the pass, but bounced right to Makena Kushniruk who buried it seven minutes into the second.
  • Mount Royal's Aliya Jomha tied it up late in the second, but the hometown Cougars restored the one-goal lead on a Hannah Pennell goal just under four minutes into the third. Hubbard attempted a shot from the slot off the rush, but the puck bounced right to Pennell who snapped it home.
  • Julia Duke tied it up for Mount Royal with four minutes to go in regulation, and in the extra session Athena Hauck slid the puck over to McNinch on a 2-on-1 and the second-year forward chipped it over Regina goalie Arden Kliewer to clinch the win.

NOTES
  • Hubbard's two-assist performance was the first multiple-assist game of her U SPORTS career.
  • Kliewer stopped 33 of Mount Royal's 36 shots.

NEXT UP
The two teams will match up again on Saturday at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is set for 5:00 PM.
