Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Fourth-quarter push leads Cougars past UNBC

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team won its second game over UNBC in as many nights on Saturday, pulling away from the Timberwolves for a 74-65 victory at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars used three-pointers by Nick Barnard, Matt Barnard, and Cade Mather on consecutive possessions to build up an early double-digit lead and Regina took a 28-19 lead after the opening quarter.
  • UNBC battled back in the second, scoring seven straight points to get to within two and getting a three from Spencer Ledoux at the buzzer to cut Regina's lead to 41-38 at the halftime break.
  • The two teams continued to play it tight in the third quarter. UNBC took its first lead since the game's opening minutes on a Will Keyes layup with a minute and a half to go, and Matt Barnard's bucket put the Cougars up 58-57 heading into the fourth.
  • The Cougars were able to put UNBC away down the stretch, and once again doing it on the defensive side of the floor. They held the Timberwolves without scoring for four and a half minutes, in that time scoring 12 consecutive points to turn what had been a one-point lead for Regina into a 72-59 advantage with under four minutes to go.

NOTES
  • The Cougars (10-2) once again have the best record in Canada West thanks to Trinity Western's overtime win over Victoria on Saturday.
  • Matt Barnard was 11-for-15 from the field and piled up a career-high 28 points while also pulling down 8 rebounds.
  • Nick Barnard finished with 13 points and had 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals in the win.
  • UNBC (6-6) was led by Ledoux and Chris Ross, who both had 15 points.
