Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Runke, Whyte score but Cougars fall to MacEwan

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team suffered a 6-2 loss to MacEwan on Saturday at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MacEwan opened up the scoring with a pair of goals in the first period. Kole Gable put them into the lead six minutes in, then Carter Chorney scored on the power play later in the frame.
  • The Cougars got one back late in the second period. Matt Culling's shot from near the right faceoff dot was saved, but Kade Runke was right there to jump on the rebound for his fifth of the campaign.
  • MacEwan's Jordan Taupert answered almost immediately to restore the two-goal advantage, and Ethan Strang's power play goal with just 18 seconds to go in the period gave the Griffins a 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
  • After Vincent Scott extended the lead for MacEwan early in the third, Carson Whyte replied for the Cougars after deflecting a Ty Barnstable shot from the point for his second goal of the weekend. But Regina could draw no closer to MacEwan, and the Griffins closed out the scoring with a late Scott empty netter.

NOTES
  • The weekend sweep puts MacEwan in firm control of Canada West's final playoff spot. The Griffins will clinch sixth place with a single point in either of their two remaining games against Manitoba, or a Regina loss in any of the Cougars' final four games.
  • Culling, Christian Riemer, Barnstable, and Paycen Bjorklund all had assists on Saturday. Ethan Anders got the start in net for the Cougars and made 34 saves.

NEXT UP
Regina hosts Trinity Western next Friday (7:00 PM) and Saturday (5:00 PM) at The Co-operators Centre. Both of those games are true must-win situations for the Cougars.
