QUICKLY
A power play goal by MacEwan's Tess Collier early in the second period was the only goal of the game as the Griffins took a 1-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars dominated the first period in terms of shots with a 15-1 edge, but couldn't break through and it was MacEwan that opened the scoring three minutes into the middle stanza.
- Collier collected the puck at the right point following an Allee Isley shot that missed, and the first-year defender sailed a wrist shot through traffic for her second goal of the season.
- Regina also had a 12-7 edge in shots in the second period and a 5-3 advantage in the third, but couldn't solve MacEwan goalie Brianna Sank.
- The Cougars were whistled for a late cross checking penalty just as Arden Kliewer was about to be pulled for an extra attacker. With Regina down a player for the final two minutes, MacEwan kept possession almost the entire time and never did allow Kliewer a chance to get to the bench.
NOTES
- Manitoba took a 1-0 win over Trinity Western on Saturday. That win puts the sixth-place Bisons five points ahead of Regina for the final Canada West playoff spot with two weekends to go in the regular season. The Cougars finish the conference schedule with a pair of games at Trinity Western and two at home to Calgary, while Manitoba has two at home against MacEwan and two on the road at Saskatchewan.
- Regina finished with 32 shots to MacEwan's 11. MacEwan was 1-for-6 on the power play while the Cougars finished 0-for-5.
