QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team struck first with an early goal by
Jessica Chow, but Saskatchewan pulled out a 2-1 win on Friday night in a U-Prairie Challenge match at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chow's goal came in the 22nd minute. An attempted clearance by a Saskatchewan defender was partially blocked and the ball deflected right to Chow, and the fourth-year midfielder stepped into a left-footed shot from 20 yards out and put it into the left corner for her second goal of the season.
- Saskatchewan drew level in the 43rd minute, and it came off the foot of former U of R player Amou Madol. The Cougars weren't able to handle a clearance to the left side of the pitch and Madol stepped into a shot from distance, lofting a long shot over Regina keeper Kareena Andersen for the tying goal.
- The two teams went into halftime knotted at 1-1 and what would turn out to be the game-winning goal came shortly after the break. In the 53rd minute, Jenna Steacy curled a left-footed shot into the far corner of the net to put Saskatchewan into the lead.
- The Cougars had opportunities to tie it, but weren't able to break through. Among the chances was a run by Emma Lowe in the 84th minute off a nice ball from Delaney Rhinehart, but Lowe's shot went just right of the net while staving off a Saskatchewan defender.
POSTSEASON IMPLICATIONS
Though they're not mathematically eliminated from the playoff race, the loss puts the Cougars' hopes for a sixth consecutive postseason berth on life support. The Cougars need to win each of their remaining three games while hoping that either Saskatchewan loses out, or Alberta gets no more than a single point in their final four contests.
