Cougars settle for three-point weekend after shootout loss to MacEwan

Blais, Hubbard score for Regina; Peace makes first career start in net

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team settled for a three-point road weekend after falling 3-2 to MacEwan in a shootout on Saturday night at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Regina scored the game's lone first-period goal just as a MacEwan minor penalty was about to expire. A Griffins defender attempted to clear the puck from in front of the net but it hit Lauren Focht and deflected right to Jordyn Blais, who hammered it home from the slot to give the Cougars the lead.
  • The Cougars extended the lead in the second period. Kaylee Dyer sent a hard pass over to Paige Hubbard in the slot, and the U of R captain redirected home to notch her first goal of the season.
  • Regina took that 2-0 lead into the second intermission, but MacEwan's Tess Collier scored early in the third to cut the lead to one.
  • The Cougars then took five consecutive minor penalties in the period. They successfully killed off the first three, but MacEwan made good on its fourth opportunity with the power play on a goal by Allee Isley with just five minutes remaining in regulation.
  • The two teams went to overtime for the second night in a row, and - again - solved nothing in the five-minute extra session despite the Cougars spending the first two minutes down a player due to a hooking penalty called at the end of regulation.
  • In the shootout, Paige Hubbard scored in the third round to extend the game after MacEwan's Sydney Jack had scored in the second. Neither team was successful in the fourth round, and Jack was sent out again in the fifth round and scored again. Raea Gilroy's attempt in the fifth round was stopped, giving MacEwan the win and the extra point.

NOTES
  • Third-year goalie Lexi Peace got her first career Canada West start for the Cougars and stopped 13 of MacEwan's 15 shots on net.
  • Regina had an 18-16 advantage in shots on net with Dyer recording a team-leading four shots for the Cougars.
  • MacEwan finished 1-for-9 on the power play while the Cougars were 1-for-6.
  • The Cougars (3-0-1) are alone in first place in Canada West's East Division, but Alberta is just a single point behind and the Pandas could take over first with a win over Manitoba on Sunday.

NEXT UP
The Cougars are back at home next weekend to host the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night and Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. They'll then have the following weekend off before returning to Canada West play at home against Trinity Western on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.
