Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Quick start lifts Manitoba to 6-3 win over Cougars

Bisons score three in first en route to victory

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team fell 6-3 to the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite an 11-9 edge in shots for Regina in the opening period, it was all Manitoba on the scoreboard. The Bisons opened the scoring with a Hayden Ostir goal just 20 seconds in, then Skyler Bruce scored again for Manitoba less than a minute and a half later. Manitoba wasn't done there, as Codey Behun scored another even-strength goal for the Bisons to put them up 3-0 after the first.
  • Behun scored again with a shorthanded goal early in the second, but the Cougars got back into the game shortly after that with two quick goals.
  • Paycen Bjorklund scored Regina's first on the power play just 30 seconds after Behun's second goal, wiring a shot from the top of the right circle with Logan Barlage screening in front.
  • And just 34 seconds after Bjorklund's goal, Carson Whyte drove to the net and redirected a pass from Jaxon Steele to give him his second goal of the season and get the Cougars to within two.
  • But that was as close as the Cougars would come. Riley Zimmerman scored early in the third to put Manitoba back up by three, and while the Cougars soon responded with Bjorklund's second goal they couldn't cut into the lead any further. Ostir added an empty netter for Manitoba in the dying seconds with the outcome already decided.

NOTES
  • Manitoba ended up with a 32-30 advantage in shots on net. Braden Holt stopped 27 saves in the win for the Bisons, while Adam Evanoff made 26 saves for the Cougars.
  • Steele's assist on Whyte's goal was the Red Deer Polytechnic transfer's first career Canada West point. Adam McNutt got the second assist on that goal, which was also the first Canada West point for the rookie defenceman.
  • Bjorklund's two-goal effort was the second of his U of R career. He also had a pair of goals last October at Trinity Western.
