Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams fall to Huskies in Saskatoon, but playoff hopes remain alive

Manitoba's improbable comeback win over Alberta opens door for Rams

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams lost 22-20 to Saskatchewan on Saturday in a U-Prairie Challenge and Canada West Week 7 battle in Saskatoon, but the Rams' postseason hopes stayed alive and well thanks to the out-of-town scoreboard.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite Saskatchewan scoring the lone touchdown of the first half on what was the Huskies' first drive of the game, it was the Rams that went into the break with the lead. Isaac Wegner had three first-half field goals and the Rams also scored two points on a conceded safety, putting Regina up 11-10 at the half.
  • The rock fight continued in the third with a Wegner rouge off the opening kickoff and a conceded safety for each team standing as the only points of the quarter. But the momentum changed on the final play of the third as Saskatchewan recovered a fumble in Rams territory, and the Huskies were able to convert early in the fourth with a field goal that put them up 15-14.
  • Saskatchewan extended the lead when Anton Amundrud hit Daniel Wiebe for a 24-yard touchdown pass up the middle, putting the Huskies up 22-14 with just over six minutes to go, but the Rams had a response.
  • Rams quarterback Noah Pelletier engineered the team's finest drive of the game when they needed it the most. He threw completions for first downs to D'Sean Mimbs, Olivier Savard, and Emmett Steadman, and also had a big 13-yard rush himself on a third-down gamble early in the possession. The Rams reached deep into their bag of tricks to score when Olivier Savard took a direct snap and pitched it to Steadman, who found Pelletier in the corner of the end zone for the quarterback's first U SPORTS reception and the touchdown.
  • Pelletier's touchdown put the Rams within two points and they made the obvious decision to go for two, but his pass to D'Sean Mimbs at the back of the end zone fell incomplete. The Rams weren't able to recover the onside kick and never touched the ball again, as Saskatchewan got three first downs on the ensuing drive and the Huskies were able to kneel out the clock to seal the win.

NOTES
OUT-OF-TOWN FIREWORKS
  • The Rams headed into Saturday in full control of their playoff destiny, with wins in their final two games assuring them of a postseason berth.
  • Full control quickly gave way to scoreboard watching after the Huskies hung on to win, and Manitoba delivered in a spectacular fashion. Down 30-4 to Alberta at one point late in the third quarter, the Bisons reeled off 26 unanswered points to push the game to overtime and then won it in the extra session.
  • Manitoba's improbable comeback put the Rams back into control of their postseason destiny. A win over Alberta next Friday at Leibel Field will give the Rams fourth place in the Canada West standings and a trip to either Manitoba or the UBC in the Hardy Cup semifinals.

NEXT UP
The Rams and the Golden Bears will meet on Friday night at Leibel Field in Regina. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
