QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's soccer team closed out the 2024 season with a 1-1 road draw at Manitoba on Sunday afternoon at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Manitoba enjoyed the run of play in the first half as the Bisons held a 6-0 advantage in shots on net, but Regina keeper Cassidy Fedoruk was up to the challenge and stopped all six of them to keep the match scoreless at halftime.
- The Cougars began to generate quality chances in the second half and broke through in the 68th minute with the match's first goal. Kirsten Koellmel delivered a fine cross from the right into the box for Peyton Enns, who chipped it over the Manitoba keeper for her career-high sixth goal of the campaign.
- Regina's lead didn't last for long, though. Just two minutes later, Manitoba's Shannon Lee finally solved Fedoruk on a free kick from distance, putting it into the top of the net over the outstretched arm of the U of R keeper for what would be the final goal of the contest.
NOTES
- The draw secures a four-point road weekend and fifth place in Canada West's Prairie Division for the Cougars, who finish the season with a 5-7-2 record.
- Enns becomes just the fourth player in U of R history to score six goals in a season, joining Meagan Cormier, Kyra Vibert, and Jessica Waller. Cormier and Waller both accomplished the feat twice.
- Enns finishes her fourth season of U SPORTS eligibility with 17 career goals, just one behind Waller for second place on the U of R's all-time last and four behind Cormier's school-record total of 21.
- Fedoruk made nine saves for the Cougars as she finishes the season with a 4-1-1 record in her six starts.
- All three of the U of R's graduating players played on Sunday. Allyson Schneider got the start and played all 90 minutes, Miranda Baker played the entire second half, and Abby Patterson played 16 second-half minutes.
