Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars shut out Lethbridge at windy U of R Field

Enns, Fredlund both score in 2-0 win

QUICKLY
Peyton Enns and Presley Fredlund both scored as the University of Regina's women's soccer team took a 2-0 shutout victory over Lethbridge on Saturday in exceptionally windy conditions at the U of R Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars had the wind at their backs to start the match and got on the board in the ninth minute. Peyton Enns had multiple early opportunities and broke through when she pounced on a rebound and knocked home her third goal of the season.
  • Regina continued to enjoy the vast majority of chances in the first half and connected again in the 33rd minute. Allyson Schneider delivered a corner kick from the right to a perfect location on the far side of the net just off the goal line and rookie midfielder Presley Fredlund did the rest, connecting with a header for her first Canada West goal after Lethbridge keeper Heidi Andres got a piece of the ball but not enough.
  • The Cougars enjoyed a 10-3 advantage in shot attempts and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal in the first half, and successfully dealt with Lethbridge having the wind after the break.
  • The Pronghorns directed three shots on net in the second half but Regina's Cassidy Fedoruk dealt with them all, ending up with a five-save shutout as she recorded her second clean sheet of the season.

NOTES
  • Saturday's match was one of the windiest in Cougar history, with sustained wind out of the northwest at 60 km/h throughout the match with several gusts in excess of 90 km/h.
  • Enns' goal was the 14th of her career. She's now four goals back of Jessica Waller for second in school history and 7 back of Meagan Cormier's U of R record of 21. It was also her fourth career game-winning goal, which also puts her in third place in school history behind only Tayler Firth (7) and Cormier (6).
  • Schneider's assist was the sixth of her career, putting her into a tie with Grace Miller for third in U of R history.
  • Fredlund's goal came in her second Canada West game and her first career start.
  • Haylee Evans, Delaney Rhinehart, and Makenna Sackmann each played all 90 minutes in the win for the Cougars.

PLAYOFF HUNT
Regina will head into Sunday three points back of fourth-place Saskatchewan for the final Prairie Division postseason berth. The Cougars are also four back of third-place Alberta, though both of those teams will be favoured on Sunday as the Pandas play host to Winnipeg and Saskatchewan entertains Lethbridge.

NEXT UP
The Cougars host No. 9-ranked Calgary on Sunday at the U of R Field with a noon scheduled start time.
