Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars fall 3-0 to TWU for first regulation loss of season

Regina still in sole possession of first place in East Division

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team lost in regulation for the first time this season on Saturday after falling 3-0 to Trinity Western at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trinity Western opened the scoring three minutes in. Reilley Kellner took advantage of a turnover at the U of R blueline and had her initial shot stopped, but after a scramble the puck bounced back off of Kellner and in for the first goal of the game.
  • The Cougars appeared to have tied it up five minutes into the second when Paige Hubbard jammed in a loose puck at the side of the net following a goalmouth scramble. But the referees waved off the goal, ruling that the TWU goalie Mabel Maltais had been interfered with on the play.
  • The disallowed goal meant that the score stayed 1-0 for TWU until the Spartans struck twice in the back half of the second period. Jace Scott one-timed a slap shot from the left point on the power play to put the Spartans up two, and a few minutes later Olivia Leier added to the lead with a fortunate bounce off a Regina defender's skate in front of the net.

NOTES
  • Maltais had a 27-save shutout for Trinity Western while Natalie Williamson stopped 33 of 36 shots for Regina.
  • TWU was 1-for-5 on the power play while the Cougars were 0-for-6.
  • Regina (5-1-2) remains in first place in Canada West's East Division with 12 points. The Cougars are one point up on second-place Manitoba (5-2-1) and two points ahead of third-place Alberta (5-3-0).

NEXT UP
