Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Defence lifts Cougars to 62-59 win over Manitoba

U of R improves win streak to four games with victory over Bisons

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team held on for a 62-59 road victory over Manitoba in a low-scoring Canada West game on Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manitoba used a 12-2 run to jump out to a 16-8 first-quarter lead, but Lodie Kenyi and Kaz Dornstauder combined for eight points in the final two minutes to make it a 19-17 game at the end of the period.
  • The Cougars threw a huge counterpunch in the second quarter, going on a 20-2 run to turn what had been another eight-point lead for Manitoba into a double-digit lead for Regina. The Cougars took a 37-32 lead into halftime before both offences dried up after the break.
  • The two teams combined for just 22 points in a quiet third quarter. Regina took a 46-45 lead into the fourth, and scored 10 straight points to go up 60-51 at the midway point of the quarter. Manitoba brought it back to a one-possession score and had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but Jordan Krause's fall-away corner three hit back iron to give the Cougars the win.

NOTES
  • Kenyi finished with a game-high 14 points for the Cougars and also pulled down 8 rebounds.
  • Three other U of R players scored in double figures including Jamie White with 12, Dornstauder with 11, and Ben Kamba with 10.
  • Christian Tabiri had 8 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • After losing three straight games to start the Canada West schedule, the Cougars have now reeled off four straight wins and are 4-3 on the season.
  • Manitoba falls to 3-1 with the loss.
  • Assistant coach Jamal Williams served as acting head coach for the Cougars in the win while women's basketball head coach Dave Taylor provided support on the bench. U of R head coach Steve Burrows didn't make the trip to assist with program-related matters in Regina.
