Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huge fourth-quarter run powers Cougars to win over Manitoba

Cougars reel off 21 straight points as part of a 28-2 second-half run

QUICKLY
It was tight for three and a half quarters, but the University of Regina's women's basketball team scored 21 consecutive fourth-quarter points and won 80-67 over Manitoba on Friday night in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams spent nearly the entire first half separated by only a single possession. Jade Belmore's three at the first-quarter buzzer gave Regina a 25-21 lead after the opening period, and the Cougars held a 43-42 advantage at halftime.
  • Manitoba came out strong to start the second half. Emily Mandamin and Emerson Martin hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions which was immediately followed by a Darya Rom bucket which put the Bisons up by double digits.
  • The Cougars laid the groundwork for what was to come late in the third quarter. They scored the final seven points of the period to get within four, then simply dominated the game in the fourth. Counting the run to finish the third, the Cougars went on a 28-2 run which included those 21 straight points in the fourth as they ended up with a 13-point victory.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore just missed out on a triple-double as she finished along with a game-high 24 points to go along with 12 rebounds and 9 steals.
  • Izzi Fust and Cara Misskey both scored 16 points. Fust led all players with 13 rebounds, while Misskey added 6 assists and 6 steals.
  • Rachel Vanderhooft also scored in double figures for Regina, finishing with 12 points.
  • The Cougars improve their Prairie Division-leading Canada West record to 6-1 with the win.
