Cougars score three in first; win 5-2 over MacEwan

Stewart, Dyer, Focht, Hubbard, Long score for U of R in victory

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team scored three first-period goals and took a 5-2 victory over MacEwan on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars scored early in Friday's game from a nice rush up the left wing by Kaitlyn Gilroy. Gilroy drove wide on a MacEwan defender and slipped a pass into the slot to to Tessa Stewart, who scored her first Canada West goal and put the Cougars into the lead.
  • Kaylee Dyer extended the lead after knocking home a rebound soon after Stewart's goal. Megan Long's slap shot from the left circle was blocked, but Dyer was right there to pounce on the loose puck for her second of the season.
  • MacEwan's Ali MacAulay replied shortly after Dyer's goal, but the Cougars restored the two-goal lead late in the opening frame. Lauren Focht drove the net following a rush by Shaylee Scraba and scored off the rebound, giving the fourth-year forward her second goal of the year.
  • Paige Hubbard scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season midway through the second, again off a rebound. Julianne Girardin let a shot go from the right point which was saved, but Hubbard grabbed it and scored on a backhand.
  • Allee Isley scored on the power play for MacEwan late in the third to get back to within two, but that was as close as the Griffins would come. The Cougars added one final goal when Long scored on an empty net to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Arden Kliewer got the start in net for the Cougars and stopped 14 of MacEwan's 16 shots to register her fourth win in six games this season.
  • Gilroy and Long both had two-point nights. Gilroy assisted on the goals by Stewart and Hubbard, while Long got the primary assist on Dyer's goal.
  • The Cougars improve to 7-3-3 on the season with the win.
