Cougars outlast Mount Royal for Thursday victory

Jamie White scores 18 in win

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team outlasted Mount Royal for a 69-65 road victory in a rare Thursday night game at Kenyon Court in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars clamped down defensively in the first half, surrendering just 23 points in the first two quarters and taking a 35-23 lead into the break after scoring the final 7 points of the period.
  • The third quarter was all Mount Royal. The Cougars saw what had been a 12-point lead evaporate in a hurry as MRU went on a 23-7 run capped by back-to-back Avnoor Bhullar triples which put them up 50-46 late in the third. Mount Royal took a one-point lead into the final quarter after outscoring Regina by a 29-16 margin in the third.
  • The Cougars took the lead back on a Kaz Dornstauder layup on their first possession of the fourth. Another Dornstauder bucket gave Regina the lead again after Mount Royal had briefly pulled in front, and the Cougars led the rest of the way.
  • Ben Kamba got a key bucket after a Cade Mather steal to put the Cougars up by five with a minute and a half remaining, and the Regina defence did the rest with a pair of key defensive stops on the next two MRU possessions. An offensive rebound off his own miss for Zachary Hillis with just 16 seconds to go all but sealed the win for Regina, as Mount Royal had to foul and Kamba hit a free throw to extend the lead to six.

NOTES
  • Jamie White was 4-for-7 from three-point range and had a game-high 18 points for Regina.
  • Lodie Kenyi added 12 points while Kamba and Christian Tabiri both scored 11.
  • Hillis and Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo both pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
  • Winners of five of their past six games, the Cougars (5-4) are now tied with Mount Royal for fifth place in Canada West's Prairie Division.
