Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams win BioSteel Hardy Cup with road win over Saskatchewan

Defence lifts Rams to second Canada West title in school history

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina Rams pulled off a historic 19-14 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday afternoon to claim the BioSteel Hardy Cup at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.
  • The victory gives the Rams their second Canada West championship in school history, joining the fabled 2000 squad that went on to win the Atlantic Bowl and make a Vanier Cup appearance.

NEXT UP: THE MITCHELL BOWL
  • The victory tees up another home game for the Rams, who will host RSEQ champion Laval in the Mitchell Bowl next Saturday at Mosaic Stadium (2:00 PM).
  • Next Saturday's clash will mark the first time in history that the Rams have hosted a national semifinal bowl. The 2000 team went on the road to defeat Saint Mary's in the Atlantic Bowl in Halifax.
  • The winner of the Rams/Laval game will advance to the Vanier Cup, where they'll meet the winner of the Uteck Bowl between Wilfrid Laurier and Bishop's.

QUOTABLE
"It's the story of our season. We go down 14-1 but we don't flinch, we don't panic, we know we're going to be just fine. We regrouped and took it one play at a time, and just played Rams football out there. I'm so proud of our players and our staff for sticking to the game plan and getting it done. I think our defence is the best in Canada and they did it again for us today." - Rams head coach Mark McConkey

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Isaac Wegner got a rouge on the opening kickoff of the game, but Saskatchewan quickly replied with a touchdown on their first possession with a 13-yard pass from Anton Amundrud to Daniel Wiebe.
  • The Huskies extended their lead early in the second quarter after taking advantage of Regina's second fumble of the game. Saskatchewan's offence started from near midfield and was in the end zone eight plays later on another connection from Amundrud to Wiebe.
  • Down 13 points at that juncture of the game, the Rams responded to Wiebe's second touchdown with their best drive of the game. The offence picked up five first downs and though the drive stalled in Saskatchewan territory, Wegner hit a field goal from 29 yards out.
  • The defence then began to make its mark on the game. Jackson Sombach picked off an Amundrud pass and brought it all the way back to Saskatchewan's 16-yard line, with the 34-yard return setting the table for the Rams' first touchdown. Noah Pelletier found Emmett Steadman with a five-yard touchdown pass, cutting Saskatchewan's lead to 14-11.
  • The score stayed 14-11 through halftime and until midway through the third quarter when Carson Sombach came up with one of the biggest plays in Rams history. Sombach hauled in a deflected pass, evaded several Saskatchewan players, and ran it 45 yards all the way to the end zone for what would turn out to be the game-winning score. Wegner hit the convert and then added another rouge on the ensuing kickoff, making the score 19-14 for the Rams.
  • And simply put, Sheldon Gray's defence did the rest. The Rams surrendered only three first downs after the pick six, and twice picked off Amundrud in the fourth quarter including a diving interception by Jacob Tkachuk near midfield midway through the period.
  • The Rams looked poised to add more points to the board after Garret Hatchard recovered a fumble on a punt return deep in Saskatchewan territory with just over three minutes to go. But they lost an opportunity on 3rd-and-1 due to having too many players in the huddle, then fumbled the snap on a field goal to walk away with no points on the board.
  • But the Rams came up with a huge stuff on Saskatchewan's next possession. The Huskies gave the ball to Ryker Frank on 3rd-and-2, but he was met by Tarick Polius and Cameron Mah and stopped short of the marker.
  • The Rams had to punt, giving Saskatchewan one last chance with 36 seconds to go. But the Huskies were pinned deep in their own territory, and Colin McKellar's interception sealed the win for the Rams.
