QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team hung on for a 64-61 victory over Fraser Valley on Sunday night in a Wesmen Classic semifinal at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Regina's 8-0 run in just over a minute late in the fourth quarter lifted them to the win. The late spurt was capped by a Jade Belmore steal and layup, and on the ensuing possession Belmore found Cara Misskey for a three-pointer that put the Cougars up 63-56 with just 1:42 remaining.
• Fraser Valley scored the next five points after the Cougars rushed their next two possessions and pulled with two points at 63-61 with 44 seconds to go, but that was as close as the Cascades would come.
• UFV got a stop on the next Regina possession but missed a layup that would have tied the game. The Cougars then hit a free throw to go up three after the Cascades had to foul, and a three-pointer by Fraser Valley with two seconds to go hit rim and left Regina with the victory.

NOTES

• Izzi Fust led Regina with 18 points and added 7 rebounds, 5 of which came on the offensive glass.
• Misskey had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Belmore fell just short of joining her, ending up with 17 points and 9 rebounds while also collecting 5 assists and 4 steals.
• Julia Tuchscherer had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Fraser Valley, which falls to 13-7 against U SPORTS competition this year.

TOURNAMENT FINAL

• The Cougars will match up with No. 9 Guelph on Monday night in the Wesmen Classic final. Game time is set for 8:00 PM at the Duckworth Centre.
• Regina and Guelph also met during non-conference play last season. The Gryphons took a 70-63 victory over the Cougars on Oct. 15, 2023 at the Calgary Cup.
