Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars take 5-3 road win over Manitoba to close out first half

Brook scores twice, Holoien dishes out three assists in win over Bisons

QUICKLY
Jakob Brook scored twice as the University of Regina's men's hockey team took a 5-3 road victory over Manitoba on Saturday night at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manitoba jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a goal by Michael King and a power play goal by Jonny Hooker, but the Cougars battled back in short order.
  • Regina got on the board courtesy of Blake Heward's third goal of the year. Heward teed up a one-timer from the right point and blasted it through a Jakob Brook screen just under two minutes after Hooker's goal.
  • Brook tied up the game on the power play a few minutes later, deflecting a Carson Whyte shot to send the two teams into the first intermission tied at 2-2.
  • Brook gave the Cougars their first lead of the game after taking a drop pass from Leyton Holoien and taking a hard, low shot from the right faceoff dot that gave him his fourth goal of the season and the second multiple-goal game of his U SPORTS career.
  • Manitoba's Grady Lane tied it up on the power play shortly after Brook's second goal, but the Cougars again replied in a hurry. Jordan Borysiuk collected a rebound off a Matt Culling shot and scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
  • The Cougars had to kill off two late penalties, but did so successfully and Jackson Doucet's empty net goal sealed the victory.

NOTES
  • Adam Evanoff made his fifth consecutive start in net for the Cougars and stopped 18 of Manitoba's 21 shots in the win.
  • Both power plays were clicking on Saturday. Manitoba finished 2-for-4 with the man advantage, while Regina was 2-for-5.
  • Holoien assisted on both Brook goals as well as Doucet's empty netter, giving the second-year defenceman a three-point night.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will now take a month-long break from Canada West play to concentrate on fall semester exams. They'll start the second half with a U-Prairie Challenge weekend against the Huskies which will see the two teams meet in Regina on Friday, Jan. 10 and in Saskatoon the next night.
