Shorthanded Cougars close out year with setback to Calgary

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's hockey team closed out its 2023-24 campaign on Saturday night with a 7-2 road loss to Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Calgary opened up the scoring with three first-period goals, two of which came off the stick of Sean Strange. Jake Poole got the other, notching his 17th of the season for the Dinos.
  • Jadon Joseph added to the lead early in the second, but the Cougars got one back later in the frame when Kolton Shindle fired a shot low blocker from the right circle for his second goal of the year.
  • But Calgary had a quick response in the form of a Connor Gutenberg goal, which came just 57 seconds after Shindle scored and sent the Dinos into the second intermission with a 5-1 lead.
  • Regina got another one in the third period when Paycen Bjorklund forced a turnover at his own blue line and led a rush up ice. Bjorklund's initial shot was saved, but the puck squeaked out to Matt Culling who had a wide-open net for his third goal of the season.
  • Calgary closed the scoring with goals from Jaeger White and Marty Westhaver later in the third. White's goal came with Calgary on the man advantage.

NOTES
  • The Cougars had only three healthy defencemen dressed on Saturday, so Ty Barnstable and Eric Houk both slid back to the blueline.
  • Calgary enjoyed a 48-20 advantage in shots. Regina goalie Adam Evanoff finished with 41 saves on the night.
  • Jordan Borysiuk and Griffin Asham-Moroz both drew assists on Shindle's goal.
  • Calgary finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Cougars were 0-for-1.
