Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Big fourth quarter lifts UFV over Cougars in Winnipeg

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team was outscored 25-10 by Fraser Valley in the fourth quarter as the Cascades pulled away for a 74-62 victory on Wednesday night in a Canada West play-in game in Winnipeg, Man.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Zach Hillis sparked the Cougars in the first half. The first-year guard came into the game with a season high of two points, but scored nine in the first half alone to go along with four rebounds.
  • The Cougars led 12-5 midway through the first quarter, but Fraser Valley reeled off a 13-4 run and the Cascades took a two-point lead into the second.
  • Regina responded with a 12-2 run which included triples by Jalen Edwards and Cade Mather to go up by seven but after a big three-point play by Hillis, UFV's Dario Lopez scored the final four points of the half to make it a one-possession game at the break.
  • The two teams were separated by three or fewer points for all but 46 seconds for the third quarter and for the first three-plus minutes of the fourth, but Fraser Valley pulled away for good down the stretch. After a Hayden Collier triple tied the game at 55-55 a little over two minutes into the final quarter, Fraser Valley scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. That push started a 19-4 run for the Cascades over a seven-minute stretch, and a three-point play by Lopez with 1:45 to go put UFV up by 11 and all but ended any hope of a comeback by the Cougars.

NOTES
  • No. 11-seeded Fraser Valley moves on to Thursday's Canada West quarterfinals against No. 3 Winnipeg.
  • Collier hit three triples and finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 blocks for Regina. Hillis had 11 points in a spirited 17 minutes off the bench, while Nick Barnard and Ben Kamba both finished with 8 points.
  • Dylan Kinley had a game-high 20 points for UFV while also leading all players with 11 rebounds. Lopez added 18 points and 8 rebounds.
  • The win was Fraser Valley's first over Regina in three head-to-head matchups this season. The Cougars swept the Cascades by scores of 64-56 and 81-80 back in late November in Regina.
