Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Late power play goal lifts Dinos over Cougars

QUICKLY
Courtney Kollman's power play goal with just under a minute to go gave the Calgary Dinos a 3-2 win over the Regina Cougars in a Canada West women's hockey game on Friday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sydney Mercier scored the only goal of the first period, putting Calgary up 1-0 a little over four minutes in after wiring a snap shot from the bottom of the right circle.
  • After the two teams combined for just the one goal in the game's opening 40 minutes, they exploded for a total of four in the third.
  • Shaylee Scraba got the Cougars on the board with a power play marker just over six minutes into the third. Makena Kushniruk had her initial shot stopped, but Scraba pounced on the rebound to notch her second of the campaign.
  • Kollman restored the lead for Calgary with the first of her two goals in the final period, scoring after Elizabeth Lang slipped a pass over to her on a 2-on-1.
  • The Cougars were then awarded a penalty shot after a Calgary player was whistled for covering the puck in her own crease. Jenna Merk made the most of the chance, going to her backhand and lifting it over the outstretched pad of Gabriella Durante to tie it up with just under seven minutes to go.
  • Just when it looked like the teams might need overtime to settle Friday's game, it took Calgary just nine seconds to convert on a late power play. Kollman stepped into a shot from the left circle, going high glove side to score her second game-winning goal in her last three games.

NOTES
  • The win solidified Calgary (12-13-2) into fifth place in the Canada West standings. They'll play No. 4-seeded Saskatchewan in a best-of-three conference quarterfinal series next weekend in Saskatoon.
  • Natalie Williamson got the start for Regina and stopped 20 of Calgary's 23 shots. Durante made 27 saves for the Dinos.
  • Kushniruk and Paige Hubbard both drew assists on Scraba's goal, her second of the season.
  • Calgary was 1-for-3 on the power play. Regina was 1-for-4.
