Rams open Canada West play with 24-16 road win over Calgary

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams opened the Canada West schedule with a 24-16 road win over Calgary on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Calgary opened the scoring with a pair of singles, Regina scored the game's first major. The Rams got the ball on their own 35 and promptly reeled off a 7-play, 75-yard drive which QB Owen Sieben finished off himself with an 11-yard touchdown run.
  • In the second quarter the Rams extended their lead with a 27-yard field goal, but a major storyline developed when Sieben had to leave the game due to an injury. QB Noah Pelletier entered the game with a little under four minutes to go and went the rest of the way under centre for the Rams.
  • The Rams had the only points of the second quarter. Besides Wegner's field goal, the U of R also got a Wegner rouge and a Calgary conceded safety to take a 13-2 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • The Rams pitched another shutout in the third quarter and increased the lead to 16-2 with a 24-yard field goal by Wegner.
  • Calgary finally broke through the tenacious Rams defence and scored its first major of the game early in the fourth quarter when Dom Britton found Ben Britton for a 10-yard touchdown to pull the Dinos to within seven points.
  • The Rams ended the next two Calgary possessions with interceptions as Max Polischuk and Cameron Mah both had picks, with Mah's interception setting up the Rams with a short field which Pelletier took advantage of. After consecutive passes to D'Sean Mimbs and Kenton Appel, Pelletier ran it in himself from one yard out to put the Rams up 23-9.
  • Calgary's Dom Britton connected with Luke Gutek for a 51-yard touchdown that made the score 24-16 for the Rams with 2:01 to go. The Dinos got the ball back with 17 seconds to go on their own 54-yard line, but the U of R defence sealed the win.

RAMS NOTES
  • Pelletier was brilliant in relief of Sieben, completing 14 of his 19 pass attempts for 125 yards.
  • Garret Hatchard, Mah, and Polischuk all had their first U SPORTS interceptions in the win.
  • Jevon Garwood rushed 8 times for a game-high 50 yards.
  • The Rams' defence was brilliant, limiting Calgary's offence to just 30 rushing yards and a 40% completion percentage.
  • Kenton Appel had a game-high 7 receptions for the Rams while Nicholas Sirleaf had 4 catches for a team-leading 81 yards in his first Canada West game.
  • Besides the three interceptions, the Rams were credited with nine pass breakups. Jackson Sombach had two while Hatchard, Tarick Polius, Brandon Wong, Polischuk, Ethan Jaster, Cedric McCallum, and Jacob Tkachuk each had one.
  • The Rams have now won five consecutive games over Calgary and haven't lost to the Dinos since 2019.

QUOTABLE
"I'm proud of our players and our staff. We have lots to clean up, but our goal this week was to go 1-0 and that's exactly what we did. Winning on the road in Canada West is hard, but our players found a way to make crucial plays at important times. We need to stay focused on our process and continue to get better each and every week." - Rams head coach Mark McConkey

NEXT UP
The Rams will head back to Regina to prepare for their home opener, a Week 2 battle scheduled for next Friday against Saskatchewan at Mosaic Stadium. The U-Prairie Challenge matchup is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 PM.
