Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams come up short in road loss to Manitoba

QUICKLY
The University of Regina Rams suffered a 22-13 loss to Manitoba in a low-scoring Canada West game on Saturday night at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams started quickly with their defence forcing a two-and-out on Manitoba's opening possession. Noah Pelletier's offence started with good field position and after a pair of 7-yard Marshall Erichsen rushes, Pelletier found Renzel Arinaza for a 20-yard catch-and-run which helped set up a 22-yard Isaac Wegner field goal.
  • Regina had a brilliant opportunity to extend the lead after Brandon Wong's first U SPORTS interception gave the Rams the ball in Manitoba territory. Pelletier immediately found Rylan Sokul for a huge gain all the way to the Bisons' six, but the Rams were unable to punch it in as Manitoba forced an incomplete pass on a third-down gamble.
  • Though the Rams didn't get any points, the defence held Manitoba to another two-and-out and the Bisons conceded a safety to make the score 5-0 for Regina early in the second.
  • The Rams added another single point off a missed 38-yard field goal in the second quarter, but Manitoba replied by putting together its first sustained drive of the day. The Bisons went on a 9-play, 75-yard drive capped by a Breydon Stubbs 1-yard touchdown, giving Manitoba a 7-6 lead at the half.
  • Manitoba put some distance between the two teams after halftime, scoring majors on their first two drives of the third quarter. Bisons quarterback Jackson Tachinski finished off the first drive by running it in himself from 13 yards out, and the second drive was capped by a 25-yard pass from Tachinski to Mula Yitna.
  • The Rams made it a one-possession game on their first drive of the fourth. Pelletier hit Nicholas Sirleaf on a crossing pattern for a 55-yard gain, with Sirleaf's longest reception with the Rams bringing them all the way down to Manitoba's 7-yard line. Marshall Erichsen was in the end zone on the very next play, running in his first touchdown of the season.
  • Manitoba then went on a clock-chewing 11-play drive which burned over seven minutes off the clock and finished with a critical punt single which turned the Bisons' eight-point lead into a nine-point advantage. Manitoba's defence did the rest, as Stephen Adamopoulos and Dario Macchia ended Regina's next two possessions with interceptions to seal the win for the Bisons.

RAMS NOTES
  • The Rams had great success running the ball in the first half, rushing 13 times for 85 yards in the first two quarters.
  • Erichsen finished with 16 rushes for 86 yards, 80 of which came in the first half. He had the longest rush of the game for either team, going for an electric 31-yard run in the second quarter.
  • Cameron Mah led Regina in tackles, collecting 4 solo and 10 assisted for the game.
  • For the second consecutive game, Colin McKellar had 5 solo tackles and 6 assisted tackles.
  • Jacob Dakiniewich, Demar Hohnstein, and Tarick Polius all had sacks for the Rams.
  • Sokul was the team's leading receiver with 4 catches for 67 yards.
