Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars fall 3-1 to Saskatchewan in Saskatoon

Megan Long scores U of R's lone goal in U-Prairie Challenge loss

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team conceded two quick goals in the first period and couldn't recover as Saskatchewan took a 3-1 victory over the Cougars in a U-Prairie Challenge game on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saskatchewan opened the scoring with two goals in the span of 2:20 midway through the opening frame. The first was off the stick of Shelby Williamson as the third-year forward notched her first Canada West goal, and it was quickly followed by Bronwyn Boucher's power play goal which put the Huskies up 2-0.
  • The Cougars took over the second period as they tried to cut into the two-goal Saskatchewan advantage, holding a lopsided 14-3 advantage in shots during the middle stanza. But against the run of play, the Huskies extended the lead with Avery Gottselig's first Canada West goal to put Regina in a 3-0 hole.
  • Regina got one back with just seconds remaining in the second period. Megan Long's slap shot from the left point through traffic found the back of the net, giving the third-year defender her third Canada West goal of the campaign and cutting the deficit to 3-1 at the second intermission.
  • The Cougars had another pronounced advantage in shots in the third, outshooting Saskatchewan by a 12-6 margin, but couldn't solve Huskies goalie Colby Wilson again and the home side held on for a 3-1 victory.

NOTES
  • Kaylee Dyer and Lauren Focht drew the assists on Long's goal.
  • Arden Kliewer got the start for the Cougars and made 13 saves.
  • Regina ended up outshooting Saskatchewan by a 33-16 margin.
  • Both teams finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
  • The Cougars (8-5-4) fall to third place in Canada West's East Division thanks to Manitoba's victory over Trinity Western. The Bisons now sit one point up on Regina for second.
