The University of Regina's men's basketball team led by as many as 15 points in the opening quarter, but dropped an 84-69 decision to MacEwan on Saturday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars came out firing on Saturday, opening the game on a 21-6 run with eight of those points coming courtesy of Christian Tabiri.
- After scoring just 7 points in the first quarter, MacEwan erupted for 31 in the second. The Griffins opened the period on an 8-0 run and after Regina restored the double-digit lead, MacEwan reeled off 10 consecutive points to help make it a 3-point game at the half.
- The Griffins took their first lead of the game with a Justace Byam three-pointer three minutes into the third, the first of three lead changes in the period. MacEwan led for nearly all of the fourth, with the exception of when Regina's Lodie Kenyi hit a bucket early in the quarter which briefly tied up the game before Diego Presingular replied immediately for the Griffins with a triple.
- Ben Kamba's layup got the Cougars to within one at 70-69 with four minutes to go, but that turned out to be Regina's final points of the game. MacEwan pulled away in the final minutes, putting the game away with 14 consecutive points down the stretch.
