Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 3 Pandas hang on for 1-0 win over Cougars

Abby Soyko scores lone goal in Alberta win

QUICKLY
Abby Soyko's power play marker early in the second period stood as the game's lone goal as the No. 3-ranked Alberta Pandas hung on for a 1-0 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, Soyko's goal came early in the second with Regina's Trinity Grove serving a minor penalty for body checking. Soyko fired a wrist shot from the high slot thorugh traffic and in, giving the third-year forward her ninth goal of the season.
  • Despite a parade to the penalty box in the second — Grove's minor was one of six assessed during the period, with the Cougars successfully killing off over a minute of a 5-on-3 advantage for Alberta — Soyko's goal was the only one that beat either netminder.
  • Regina pulled goalie Arden Kliewer with three minutes remaining but the Cougars weren't able to come up with the game-tying goal. The U of R's best late chance was with just over a minute to go when Julianne Girardin found Grove through the seam, but Grove wasn't able to convert on the one-timer.

NOTES
  • Alberta's Grace Glover stopped all 17 shots to notch her fourth shutout of the season.
  • Alberta finished 1-for-5 on the power play while the Cougars were 0-for-3.
  • Kliewer stopped 22 of Alberta's 23 shots.
  • The Pandas (18-3-1) are now just two wins away from clinching first place in the East Division.
  • Regina (9-7-4) falls to third place in the East after Manitoba's overtime win over Saskatchewan moves the Bisons two points ahead of the Cougars. The U of R sits nine points ahead of Saskatchewan for the third and final postseason berth in the East.

NEXT UP
The Cougars will now play four consecutive away games, starting next Friday and Saturday with a trip to play No. 2-ranked UBC in a two-game weekend series.
