Cougars complete weekend sweep with win over Winnipeg

Belmore scores 26, adds 10 rebounds for Regina

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep over Winnipeg on Saturday with an 81-63 victory at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a high-scoring first quarter which saw the two teams combine for 47 points with Regina taking a 26-21 lead, the Cougars clamped down on defence in the second quarter for the second consecutive night. After surrendering just three points in the second on Friday, the Cougars nearly repeated that performance on Saturday as they outscored Winnipeg by a 19-5 margin to go up 45-26 at the half.
  • The Wesmen got the lead down to nine points two different times in the fourth quarter, but weren't able to get any closer and the Cougars scored 9 of the game's final 10 points to seal the win.

NOTES
  • Jade Belmore had another brilliant game for the Cougars, collecting 26 points and adding 10 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Three other Regina players hit double figures in scoring. Cara Misskey had 18 points to go along with 9 assists and 6 rebounds, Rachel Vanderhooft scored 16, and Maddy Seida finished with 11.
  • Raia Guinto led Winnipeg (4-10) with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
  • The Cougars improve to 12-2 with the victory as they keep pace with both Saskatchewan and Alberta. Those three teams remain in a three-way tie atop Canada West's Prairie Division with Calgary (11-3) lurking just one win back.

NEXT UP
The Cougars finish off the Canada West schedule with six games against the other three top-four teams in the division. They'll play Alberta next Friday and Saturday in Edmonton before meeting Saskatchewan in a home-and-home the following weekend and hosting Calgary on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 at the CKHS.
