Big third quarter leads Alberta to Friday win over Cougars

Golden Bears outscore Regina 32-12 in third

QUICKLY
The University of Alberta Golden Bears put together an impressive third quarter and took out the Regina Cougars by a 93-76 score on Friday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams came out hot, but the Cougars cooled off after the midway point of the opening period and Alberta closed the quarter on a 17-2 run to put the home team up 31-18 after the first quarter.
  • The Cougars had a big response in the second in the form of an 18-5 run sparked by Christian Tabiri and Ben Kamba. Lodie Kenyi's jumper capped off the surge and put Regina up 39-38, and the Cougars took a one-point lead into the halftime break at 43-42.
  • Jordan Persad opened up the second half with a three-pointer on Regina's opening possession, but it was all Alberta from there. The Golden Bears scored the next 18 points and led by double digits the rest of the way, pushing the lead up to 26 at one point late in the fourth before the Cougars scored the game's final 9 points with the outcome already decided.

NOTES
  • Kenyi and Tabiri led Regina with 15 points each while Kamba finished with 11.
  • Five Alberta players hit double figures in scoring, led by Isaac Simon's 23-point, 10-assist double-double.
  • Both teams move to 6-9 with the result, with Alberta moving into sixth place in Canada West's Prairie Division based on the head-to-head tiebreaker.
  • The winner of Saturday's rematch between Alberta and Regina will move into sole possession of sixth in the division.
  • Both the Cougars and the Golden Bears now need some combination of four victories and Brandon losses to officially nail down a postseason berth.

NEXT UP
The two teams will close out the two-game weekend set on Saturday starting at 7:00 PM (MT) at the Saville Centre.
