University of Regina fifth-year guard
Lodie Kenyi set a new school single-game scoring record with 58 points in Saturday's 105-84 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the CKHS.
Kenyi's performance plants him in second place in the Canada West record book as well, behind only Calgary's Richard Bohne and his 64-point effort in January of 1995.
"I had no idea about the record, I couldn't believe it when I heard," Kenyi said. "I had so much adrenaline in me after the game, I was just happy about the win. The next day I was like 'woah.'"
Kenyi made 21 of his 29 shot attempts on Saturday, including 6-of-7 from behind the three-point line. He also made 10 of his 13 free throw attempts, and added nine rebounds and five assists.
"What can you really say about a game like that? 58 is a crazy number - I'm glad I had a front row seat to watch it," Cougars head coach
Steve Burrows said after the game. "We're really happy for Lodie - we know how hard he has worked on his game. I was on the bench when Tyler (Wright) scored 49 and I remember that one. Won't be forgetting this one anytime soon."
The Calgary product was lights out in crunch time for the Cougars, scoring 24 of Regina's 29 points in the fourth quarter to help the Cougars to a weekend split.Â
"Friday night I was trying to let the game come to me and I felt like it never did. The team relies on me to score and be aggressive and I felt like I let my teammates down," Kenyi added. "On Saturday I knew I had to be aggressive from the start - looking for my shot and finding matchups that I knew I could take advantage of. I felt myself getting hot and kept rolling, my teammates kept getting me in actions and getting me the ball. They made it easy for me."
The Cougars will hit the road this weekend to take on the No. 2-ranked Victoria Vikes.
"We want to make noise, show everyone we're here. We're not trying to be a middle-of-the-pack team," Kenyi said. "It's an exciting opportunity to play the defending champs ... we know it's going to be a battle but we're ready for it."
