Women's Hockey
The Cougars women's hockey team played a home-and-home series against Saskatchewan over the weekend.
 
On Friday in Saskatoon, the Huskies opened the scoring the 1st period, then scored goals in both the 2nd and 3rd to win 3-0.
 
Kaylee Dyer led the Cougars with 4 shots. Natalie Williamson started in goal and made 27 saves.
 
Saturday's game in Regina was scoreless after the 1st, but the Huskies broke the tie late in the 2nd and held on to win 1-0.
 
Makena Kushniruk led all skaters with 6 shots in the game. Amy Swayze had 29 saves in goal for the Cougars.
 
Heading into the winter break, the Cougars sit at 5-8-3 and are fourth place in the Canada West East division. They will be back on the ice on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10 in Calgary to take on the Dinos.
 
Men's Hockey
The Cougars men's hockey team was also playing the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on the weekend.
 
Friday's game was in Regina. The Cougars opened the scoring in the 1st, when Turner McMillen scored just over halfway into the frame, but Saskatchewan tied the game five minutes later, then scored another 5 goals to win 6-1.
 
Jaxon Steele and Matt Kjemhus had assists for the Cougars. Damon Cunningham got the start in net and had 23 saves.
 
On Saturday in Saskatoon, the Cougars lost 5-0. Jaron Desnoyers led the Cougars with 4 shots. Justen Maric had a career-high 35 saves in goal.
 
The Cougars are 2-14-0 and are 5th place in the East division. They will be back in action on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10, when they will host the Calgary Dinos.
 
Track & Field
The Cougars track & field them began their season with two different meets taking place over the weekend.
 
Second-year distance runners Ian Teichler and Brett MacLean were in Boston for the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, where they competed against athletes from NCAA schools. Teichler set a new U20 Provincial record in the 3000m with a time of 8:21.74, surpassing the previous record of 8:22.56 set in 2002.
 
In Regina, the Larmer Friendship Games were taking place.
 
Femi Akinloye won the Men's 60m with a personal-best time of 6.79s and also won the 200m with a personal-best time of 22.06s. Queen Clayton won the Women's 60m with a personal-best time of 7.65s.
 
Additionally, Tutu Daldum won the men's High Jump with a PB of 1.90m, and Andrew Benko won the men's shotput with a PB of 15.34m.
 
Overall, this weekend's competitions featured 38 personal bests and nine Cougar athletes are currently ranked in the U SPORTS Top 12 in their events (Teichler, MacLean, Akinloye, Clayton, Daldum, Benko, as well as Shelaine Pritchard, Joclyn Seibel, and Adam Sieben).
