Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars outlast No. 8 Calgary

Belmore scores 18, Misskey adds 17 in win

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's basketball team outlasted No. 8 Calgary for a 66-62 win on Friday night in a late-season Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Regina jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but Calgary scored the final nine points of the first quarter on a run capped by a Lilia Skumatova triple to take a 19-17 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
  • The second quarter featured seven lead changes, and Cara Misskey's buckets on back-to-back possessions to close out the half sent the Cougars into the break with a 36-32 advantage.
  • The second half had six more lead changes, five of which came in the fourth quarter alone. The last lead change came with three minutes remaining, when Misskey drilled a three-pointer to put Regina up 60-58. Calgary's Mya Proctor answered with a three-pointer a minute and a half later to get the Dinos back to within two, but the Cougars got a key defensive stop on the next possession. Misskey answered a Dinos free throw with two of her own to put Regina up by three with seconds to go, and the Cougars were able to force a turnover on a Calgary inbounds pass to lock away the win.

NOTES
  • Regina's Jade Belmore led all players with 18 points and also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to notch her ninth double-double of the Canada West schedule. Misskey finished with 17 points while Kyu Fust was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and had 8 points.
  • Proctor, Amelie Collin, and Myriam Kone all scored 11 points for Calgary. Kone added 10 points and 5 assists for the Dinos.
  • The Cougars' victory over No. 8 Calgary marks the first victory over a ranked team for the U of R this season, and their first since they toppled No. 1-ranked Saskatchewan last season in Saskatoon.

POSTSEASON UPDATE
  • Calgary (15-4) entered the weekend with only a slim chance of moving out of third place in the Prairie Division. Friday's result cements the Dinos into that position, so they'll head to Abbotsford, B.C. next weekend for a play-in game with the winner advancing to play Fraser Valley.
  • The Cougars (13-6) went into the weekend knowing they'll finish fourth in the Prairie and head to Vancouver for a play-in game next Friday. That game will almost certainly be against UBC Okanagan, barring a pair of monumental upsets by UNBC over UBC this weekend.

NEXT UP
The two teams will finish off the Canada West schedule on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is again set for 5:00 PM.
