Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

U of R's season ends with 83-70 loss to No. 3 Calgary

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team fell just short of the postseason after an 83-70 setback to the No. 3-ranked Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Christian Tabiri hit a three-pointer on the Cougars' opening possession, but Calgary quickly pulled ahead with the next 13 points and the Dinos held the lead for the remainder of the contest. Another 6-0 run by Calgary put the Dinos up 16, and they carried a 25-18 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Cougars got to within four points after a Jamie White three-point play early in the second, but Calgary rebuilt its double-digit lead and had a 40-33 advantage at the halftime break.
  • Regina again made a run at Calgary early in the third as the Cougars started the half with buckets by Zachary Hillis and Lodie Kenyi which made it a one-possession game, but that was as close as the Cougars would get for the rest of the game.
  • The Cougars made one last run when Lodie Kenyi, White, and Tabiri drilled triples on consecutive possessions to quickly turn what was a 16-point Dinos lead into just a 72-65 lead with four minutes to go, but once again Calgary was able to restore the double-digit lead and the Dinos finished with a 13-point victory.

NOTES
  • Nate Petrone led Calgary with 21 points. Martynas Sabaliauskas added 17, while Dylan Lutes scored 16 and pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds.
  • Kenyi finished with a team-high 17 points for Regina, which finishes the year with a 6-14 conference record. White and Ben Kamba both scored 14.
  • Calgary finishes the Canada West season at 16-4. They'll finish in second place in the Prairie Division and head into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed in the conference postseason. The Dinos will host the winner of a Brandon/Trinity Western play-in game next weekend.
  • The Cougars went into Saturday needing both an upset victory over Calgary and a Saskatchewan win over Brandon. Neither required result ended up happening, which allowed Brandon to

NEXT SEASON
  • The Cougars honoured fifth-year players Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo and Tabiri as part of Senior Night prior to Saturday's contest, as well as graduating fourth-year player Dakota McBride-Marean.
  • Kamba, Kenyi, and White are expected to return next season as fifth-year veterans. Hillis, Kaz Dornstauder, Cade Mather, and Jordan Persad also received significant playing time this season and are all expected back for the 2025-26 campaign.
