Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Evanoff shines as Cougars send off Riemer, Sass with win on Senior Night

Third-year netminder stops all 39 shots in 3-0 win

QUICKLY
Adam Evanoff stole the show on Saturday with a 39-save shutout for the University of Regina's men's hockey team in a 3-0 victory over MacEwan on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, the Cougars finally got on the board a little past the midway mark of the second period on a bit of a strange bounce. Carter Belitski drove the net and had his shot stopped, but the puck went into the air and bounced off Carson Whyte's right leg and in to give the U of R the lead.
  • The Cougars extended the lead to 2-0 with an Eric Pearce goal early in the third. Carson Sass had a shot from the point which didn't get through, but Turner McMillen grabbed the loose puck and quickly slid it over to Pearce for the goal.
  • Evanoff's best save came with just four minutes left with MacEwan applying tremendous pressure while on the power play. Brody Tallman fed Kadyn Chabot with a cross-seam pass and Chabot quickly snapped a shot from the left faceoff dot, but Evanoff dove across the crease to make a spectacular stop.
  • Eric Houk's empty-net goal with 31 seconds left iced the win and the weekend sweep for the Cougars.

SENIOR NIGHT
  • The Cougars honoured defencemen Christian Riemer and Carson Sass prior to Saturday's game, both of whom would register assists in the win.
  • Riemer played four seasons with the Cougars, finishing with 74 career Canada West games played and 3 goals, 9 assists, and 12 points in those contests.
  • Sass missed all of his first season with the Cougars due to injury. He ended up with 4 goals, 12 assists, and 16 points in 67 games played with the U of R. Three of those points came just this weekend, as Sass had two assists in Friday's win to go along with his helper on Pearce's goal on Saturday.

NOTES
  • Evanoff's shutout is his first in a U of R uniform and his first since stopping 46 shots in a 3-0 win for Moose Jaw over Red Deer in a Western Hockey League game back on Jan. 4, 2020.
  • McMillen's assist gives the rookie forward a five-point weekend and seven points in his last three games.
  • Whyte finishes the season with 7 goals, 10 assists, and 17 points while playing in all 28 Canada West games. The second-year forward had a breakout offensive season after collecting 4 points in 19 games as a rookie last year.
