Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cougars downed 2-0 by Mount Royal in Game 1 of quarterfinal series

Game 2 set for Saturday night in Calgary

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to Mount Royal on Friday night in Game 1 of a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series at Flames Community Arena in Calgary.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lyndsey Janes scored both goals for Mount Royal, with the first coming late in the opening period when Jerzey Watteyne found her open in the high slot for a wrist shot which beat Regina goalie Arden Kliewer to the blocker side.
  • The score stayed 1-0 until late in the middle stanza. Lyvia Butz corralled a shot from the right point which missed wide and backhanded it into the slot, and Janes was there to chip is home on the backhand to extend Mount Royal's lead to two. The second period featured a heavily lopsided shot total in Mount Royal's favour as MRU fired 18 shots on Kliewer compared to just 3 for Regina.
  • The two teams headed into the third with Mount Royal still up 2-0. The Cougars got a late power play after MRU was whistled for interference, but that only lasted 20 seconds before it was nullified by a Kaylee Dyer penalty for head contact. The Cougars first pulled Kliewer with three minutes to go, but weren't able to beat Mount Royal goaltender Kaitlyn Ross.

NOTES
  • Mount Royal finished with a 31-20 advantage in shots on goal. Ross made 20 saves to secure the shutout.
  • Neither team was able to convert on the power play despite a total of nine opportunities dished out during the contest. Regina finished 0-for-5 with the advantage while Mount Royal was 0-for-4.
  • Kliewer stopped 29 of Mount Royal's 31 shots.
