QUICKLY
The University of Regina's curling teams capped off a spectacular weekend at the Canada West Championships by winning conference banners on both the women's side and the men's side on Sunday.

WOMEN'S RECAP
  • Regina went through the round robin with a 3-1 record with wins over Lethbridge, UBC, and Alberta before dropping a close 8-6 decision to Calgary in their final game.
  • That gave them first place in Pool A, setting up a matchup with Pool B winner Thompson Rivers in the page playoff. TRU got a point in the eighth end to book a trip to the championship game, sending Regina to a Sunday morning semifinal against Victoria. The Cougars won that by a 6-3 score in seven ends, giving them a chance at a rematch with TRU in the championship final.
  • In that final, the Cougars stole one in both of the two opening ends, then stole two more in the fourth and fifth before stealing a pair in the sixth to seal a 6-0 victory and the school's second Canada West women's curling banner. The Cougars also won on the women's side in 2022.
  • The Cougars were skipped by Chloe Johnston, who lifted a Canada West banner just minutes up the road from her hometown of Okotoks, Alta. The team also consisted of lead Hannah Rugg, second Tesa Silversides, and third Chantel Hoag along with coach Danielle Sicinski.

MEN'S RECAP
  • After opening the tournament with convincing victories over both UBC and Lethbridge, the Cougars suffered what would be their only defeat of the weekend with a 4-1 loss to Calgary in their third game. The Cougars matched up with Victoria in the crossover game and won 9-2 to clinch a second-place finish in Pool B.
  • The Cougars played an elimination game on Saturday night against Alberta and scored three in the eighth end to finish the Golden Bears' weekend with a 7-4 victory. In the semifinal against Thompson Rivers, the Cougars had a four-ender in the fourth to lift them to a 6-4 victory and book their ticket to the final against host Calgary.
  • In the final, the Cougars took the lead with two in the fourth and stole another in the fifth to go up 3-1. Calgary scored one in the sixth, but the Cougars finished off the Dinos with two in the seventh which clinched a 5-2 victory and the school's first Canada West men's curling title.
  • The U of R's team consisted of skip Joshua Bryden, third Adam Bukurak, second Carter Williamson, and lead Ayden Whittmire. The same squad just returned from Italy, where they placed fourth as Team Canada at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Torino.
  • Tom Hamon was the team's coach.

HISTORY MADE
  • Though the Cougars won U SPORTS championships in both 2009 and 2024, Sunday's victory gives the U of R its first ever Canada West banner on the men's side.
  • The Cougars also claimed a conference banner back in 1970. Representing the U of R back when it was still known as the University of Saskatchewan's Regina Campus, the team consisting of Les Rogers, Garth Rusconi, Greg Kelly, and Wayne Phillips beat Winnipeg 8-3 to nail down the Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union title.

OFF TO LETHBRIDGE
The two teams will move on to represent the U of R at the U SPORTS Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Lethbridge from Feb. 24 through Feb. 28.
