Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Jomha's overtime goal gives MRU 3-2 win over Cougars

QUICKLY
Aliya Jomha scored with just eight seconds to go in overtime to give Mount Royal a 3-2 victory over Regina on Saturday in a Canada West women's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Just like Friday's game, Mount Royal opened Saturday's contest with two first-period goals. The visitors scored twice in a span of 66 seconds near the midway point of the opening stanza, with Kiana McNinch scoring the first and Lyndsey Janes adding another in short order.
  • Mount Royal enjoyed a hefty 20-2 advantage in shots in the first period and also outshot Regina by an 8-3 margin in the second, which was a scoreless frame.
  • Needing a win to improve their chances of hosting a home playoff series, the Cougars found some life in the third. Regina got on the board while on a 5-on-3 nine minutes into the period when Makena Kushniruk rifled a snap shot from near the top of the left circle for her third of the year.
  • The Cougars got the equalizer four minutes later. Olivia Leggett threw a shot on net from the left point which was blocked, but Shaylee Scraba was there to jump on the loose puck and chip it in.
  • After a frantic overtime, Jomha ended it just seconds before the game was to head to a shootout. A broken play in the neutral zone led to a breakaway for Jomha, who converted on the opportunity to give Mount Royal the victory.

NOTES
  • Mount Royal finished with a 35-19 advantage in shots. The Cougars were 1-for-3 on the power play, while MRU was 0-for-4.
  • Arden Kliewer stopped 32 of MRU's 35 shots.
  • The Cougars (10-11-5) pull to within three points of second-place Manitoba heading into the final weekend of the Canada West schedule.
