Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars sweep No. 4 Calgary on the road to stay unbeaten in conference play

Regina moves to 12-0 for just the second time in program history

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's women's basketball team completed a critical weekend road sweep of the No. 4-ranked Calgary Dinos on Saturday night with a 77-71 victory at the Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Unlike Friday's game, which saw the Cougars go on a furious fourth-quarter rally for the win, Regina took control of Saturday's contest shortly after halftime. The two teams went into the break tied at 39-39, but the Cougars took the lead for good on an Eden Wells triple two minutes into the third quarter.
  • The Cougars took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter after scoring four points in the final three seconds of the third. Cara Misskey hit a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds left, then Calgary attempted a full-court heave on the inbounds which went astray. Regina took the ball over on the baseline, and Misskey found Rachel Vanderhooft at the buzzer to put the Cougars up 59-49.
  • Regina led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter, though Calgary cut the eventual margin to six after a pair of free throws and a bucket in the final minute.
  • Jade Belmore led a balanced scoring attack for the Cougars with 16 points. Izzi Fust added 15 points, Wells finished with 14, and Vanderhooft scored 10. Misskey finished with seven points, five rebounds, and five assists in the win.

HISTORIC START
  • The Cougars are off to a 12-0 start in conference play for just the second time in program history. The only other time the U of R started a season with 12 straight conference wins was in 2011-12, when the Cougars went through Canada West play with wins in all 20 conference games.

PRAIRIE DIVISION LOOK
  • The win not only clinches the U of R's 29th consecutive postseason berth, but also helps the Cougars keep pace with Saskatchewan. The Huskies also scored a big road win on Saturday, defeating Alberta to match the Cougars with a 12-0 conference record.
  • The postseason reward for a top-two finish in the Prairie Division is significant. The division's top two teams will host a Canada West quarterfinal matchup in their home gym, while the third-place and fourth-place team will need to head off to the West Coast and hope to knock off a Pacific Division school to book a trip to the conference semifinals.

MISSKEY WATCH
  • Misskey's five assists in Saturday's win brought her five-season total with the Cougars to 386. She's now just three assists shy of Jana Schweitzer, who has held the U of R's all-time record of 389 career assists since finishing her career in 2004–05.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars are back on the road next weekend with a pair of games at Winnipeg (2-10).
