Cougars drop defensive battle Friday, high-scoring affair Saturday to Dinos

Saturday's game featured nine combined goals in the second period

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina Cougars women's hockey team was in Calgary this weekend for a two-game series against the Dinos but came up short both nights, falling 2-1 on Friday and 8-4 on Saturday.
FRIDAY NOTES
  • Friday's game was a defensive battle, but Calgary opened the scoring midway through the first period with a goal from Jess Martens.
  • The Cougars responded almost immediately, when Makena Kushniruk scored a short-handed goal less than three minutes later.
  • The game remained tied at one until Martens scored her second of the night on the power-play with just over seven minutes to go. Calgary held on to win 2-1.
  • Tessa Stewart had the lone assist on the Cougars' only goal.
  • Natalie Williamson was excellent for the Cougars in net, stopping 43 shots with a .956 save percentage.
SATURDAY NOTES
  • Calgary opened the scoring again on Saturday, then scored two more shortly after and the Cougars found themselves down 3-0 after the first period.
  • However, just one minute into the second, Shaylee Scraba got the Cougars on the board with a short-handed goal, but the Dinos scored a minute later to retake their three-goal lead.
  • The scoring was just getting started. The Cougars responded with goals by Rayna Hennie, Trinity Grove, and Felicia An in less than five minutes to tie the game at four.
  • Calgary then went on a run of their own, scoring four goals in the last eight minutes of the second period, and after a scoreless third, won 8-4.
  • Meg Farmer, Jordyn Blais, Brooke Fofonoff and Kiah Shields all had assists for the Cougars.
STANDINGS
  • With the losses, the Cougars fall to 5-10-3 on the season and sit in fifth place in the East Division.
  • The Dinos improve to 13-4-3 which is good for second place in the division.
