Game Recap: Rams Football |

Ashman runs wild as Rams roll to 43-17 win over Alberta

Rookie rushes for 214 yards; Rams put up second-highest rushing total in school history

QUICKLY
  • University of Regina rookie running back Carter Ashman rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns as the Rams snapped a three-game losing streak with a 43-17 victory over Alberta on Thursday night at Mosaic Stadium.
  • Ashman's 214 yards on 34 carries marked the seventh-highest single-game rushing total in U of R history and the 10th 200-yard rushing performance in program history. The performance also pushed Ashman past Marshall Erichsen's school record for rushing yards by a first-year running back, giving him 551 on the season.
  • Kaiden Banfield added 103 yards on 10 carries as the Rams finished with 317 rushing yards, the second-highest single-game team total in U of R history. It was just the third time in program history that two Rams players rushed for 100 yards in the same Canada West game.
  • The Rams also blocked two punts and forced six turnovers in the victory, which improved their Canada West record to 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Regina opened the scoring on its first possession, marching 74 yards on five plays before Ashman broke through for a 20-yard touchdown run just over three minutes into the game.
  • Alberta responded with 14 consecutive points to take the lead. The Golden Bears got on the board with a safety and a 31-yard Charlie Wiersma field goal before going ahead on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Christian Veilleux to Isaac Sanderson. Wiersma added a 34-yard field goal early in the second quarter to put Alberta up 14-7.
  • The Rams started their comeback with a 28-yard Ty Gorniak field goal midway through the second quarter, but the game's biggest momentum swing came on Alberta's next possession. Kaiden Banfield broke through to block a Golden Bears punt, and Brandon Wong scooped up the loose ball before returning it 12 yards for a touchdown to put Regina back in front.
  • Regina forced another turnover on Alberta's ensuing possession when Owen Zimmer knocked the ball loose from Jack Dumont following a reception. Jacob Tkachuk recovered the fumble, setting up a nine-play drive which Ashman finished with a seven-yard touchdown run. The Rams took a 24-14 lead into halftime.
  • Alberta opened the second half with another Wiersma field goal, but Regina's special teams unit came up with another huge play later in the third quarter. This time it was Kyler Banfield who blocked a punt, with Wong recovering the ball and returning it 15 yards to set up the Rams in Alberta territory. Owen Sieben connected with Nicholas Sirleaf for a 26-yard touchdown on the next play to extend Regina's lead to 31-17.
  • The Rams added two more points late in the third quarter when Alberta conceded a safety, then put the game out of reach early in the fourth. Sieben capped a 75-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Senz, giving Regina a 40-17 advantage.
  • Gorniak rounded out the scoring with a 21-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

A LITTLE IRONY
  • The Rams' historic rushing performance came on a rather ironic night for the program. Legendary former offensive coordinator Bernie Schmidt, who helped establish the Rams' reputation for prolific passing offences, was on hand to perform the ceremonial coin toss. The Rams then proceeded to rush for 317 yards, the second-highest single-game total in program history.

NOTABLE
  • Ashman's 34 carries were the most by a Regina player this season, and he averaged 6.3 yards per attempt despite the heavy workload. The first-year running back now has 551 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 87 carries this season, an average of 6.3 yards per carry.
  • Banfield averaged 10.3 yards per carry in his first significant rushing workload of the season. His 46-yard run was the longest rushing play of the night for either team.
  • The Rams' two blocked punts marked the first time Regina blocked multiple kicks in a game since Oct. 29, 2005 against Simon Fraser, when Craig Zimmer recorded both blocks. Kaiden Banfield and Kyler Banfield each blocked a punt on Thursday, with Brandon Wong recovering both. Wong returned the first 12 yards for a touchdown and the second 15 yards to set up another major.
  • Regina recovered three fumbles and intercepted three passes in the win. Max Polischuk, Jacob Tkachuk, and Owen Zimmer each recorded an interception, while Tkachuk also recovered a fumble and finished with a team-high seven tackles. The Rams held Alberta to just 59 rushing yards on 14 carries.
  • Owen Sieben finished 10-for-18 for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Nicholas Sirleaf led Regina's receivers with four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, while Kaleb Senz added a 21-yard touchdown reception.
  • Ty Gorniak connected on two of three field-goal attempts and was perfect on five converts, bringing his season scoring total to 68 points.

NEXT UP
  • The Rams (3-3) will return to action next Friday when they host UBC in a game with potentially significant implications for the Canada West playoff picture, including semifinal hosting rights. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM at Leibel Field.
