Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars push No. 3 Saskatchewan to shootout in 3-2 loss

Wirun, Hanson score for Regina; Cunningham makes 38 saves against nationally ranked Huskies

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's hockey team pushed No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan through 65 minutes before falling 3-2 in a five-round shootout in a U-Prairie Challenge game on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre in Regina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saskatchewan opened the scoring midway through the first period when Rhett Rhinehart sent a shot from the right point through traffic and past Regina goaltender Damon Cunningham.
  • The Cougars answered in dramatic fashion with less than a second remaining in the opening period. Regina captain Kade Runke intercepted a clearing attempt at the Saskatchewan blue line and fed Cole Wirun, who snapped a shot high to the glove side of Huskies goaltender Nolan Maier. The power play goal came at 19:59 and sent the teams into the first intermission tied 1-1.
  • Regina took its first lead of the night early in the second period. Jaren Brinson sent a long flip pass out of the Cougars' zone that found Otto Hanson behind the Saskatchewan defence. Hanson broke in alone and beat Maier for his first U SPORTS goal, putting Regina ahead 2-1.
  • The Cougars held that lead until late in the third period, when Saskatchewan's Raphael Pelletier collected the puck in the high slot and scored with just over five minutes remaining to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Cunningham was outstanding throughout the night, turning aside 33 shots in regulation before making another five saves in overtime. The Cougars also successfully killed off a Saskatchewan power play late in the extra period to force a shootout.
  • The teams remained deadlocked after four rounds of the shootout, with Saskatchewan's Jaydon Dureau and Regina's Ben Roulette each scoring. Liam Keeler then put the Huskies ahead in the fifth round, squeezing a shot through Cunningham's five-hole despite the Regina goaltender getting a piece of the puck. Maier stopped Runke on Regina's final attempt to secure the win for Saskatchewan.

COUGAR HIGHLIGHTS
  • Cunningham finished with 38 saves, including 14 in the first period and five more in overtime.
  • Wirun's first-period buzzer-beater was his fourth goal of the Canada West season. He moves into a tie with teammate Jye Zawatsky for second in the Canada West scoring race with eight points.
  • Hanson's second-period breakaway marker was the first U SPORTS goal of his career.
  • Regina went 1-for-3 on the power play and held Saskatchewan scoreless on four opportunities with the man advantage.

STANDINGS UPDATE
  • Saskatchewan improves to 4-1-0 and moves into sole possession of first place in the early West Division standings with eight points.
  • The Cougars (3-1-1) sit just one point back of the Huskies in second place in the division with seven points.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars and Huskies will complete their U-Prairie Challenge home-and-home series on Saturday night in Saskatoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
