Game Recap: Rams Football |

Late UBC touchdown sends Rams to 21-17 defeat

Regina still controls playoff destiny heading into regular-season finale at Manitoba

QUICKLY
  • The No. 10 University of Regina Rams held a late lead over No. 9 UBC on Friday night at Leibel Field, but the Thunderbirds scored the winning touchdown with just 1:01 remaining to escape with a 21-17 victory.
  • The loss drops Regina to 3-4 on the season, while UBC improves to 5-2 and clinches a top-two finish in Canada West along with the right to host a conference semifinal.
  • Despite the loss, the Rams still control their playoff destiny heading into next week's regular-season finale at Manitoba.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBC opened the scoring with a 32-yard field goal by Alexander Hillyard midway through the first quarter, but Regina got on the board late in the opening period when the Thunderbirds conceded a safety to make it 3-2.
  • Hillyard added a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter before the Rams put together their first touchdown drive of the night. Owen Sieben capped a nine-play, 75-yard possession with a four-yard touchdown pass to Kaiden Banfield, giving Regina a 9-6 lead.
  • The Rams added another safety and a 33-yard field goal by Ty Gorniak before halftime, taking a 14-6 advantage into the break.
  • A pair of botched punt snaps on consecutive possessions helped swing momentum in the third quarter. UBC's miscue gave Regina possession at the Thunderbirds' 43-yard line, but the Rams suffered a similar fate on their ensuing possession. The second mistake handed UBC the ball at Regina's 26, and the Thunderbirds capitalized with a four-yard touchdown pass from Drew Viotto to Ben Gutek.
  • UBC was unsuccessful on the ensuing two-point conversion, leaving Regina ahead 14-12. The Thunderbirds then tied the game at 14-14 on a safety late in the third quarter.
  • Regina had an opportunity to regain the lead early in the fourth, but Gorniak missed an 18-yard field-goal attempt. The Rams eventually moved back in front when Gorniak connected from 44 yards with 5:22 remaining.
  • UBC responded with a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that featured an unexpected change in the backfield. Canada West's leading rusher, Marvyn Larozar, left the game with an injury after a six-yard run to Regina's 48-yard line. Riley Michaud, who hadn't carried the ball all night, took over and rushed six times for 29 yards, including a one-yard touchdown run with 1:01 remaining that gave the Thunderbirds a 21-17 lead.
  • Regina advanced the ball to midfield on its final possession, but an interception with two seconds remaining sealed the victory for UBC.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Banfield led Regina's rushing attack with 95 yards on 14 carries while adding two receptions for 14 yards and the Rams' lone touchdown. First-year running back Carter Ashman finished with 51 rushing yards on 16 attempts.
  • Sieben completed 15 of his 27 pass attempts for 153 yards and one touchdown. Making his Canada West debut, Russell Arinaza caught three passes for 37 yards, including a 25-yard reception on Regina's opening offensive possession.
  • Defensively, Jacob Tkachuk led the Rams with seven solo tackles and six assisted tackles. Kaeden Brennan recorded an interception on UBC's opening possession, while Owen Zimmer had a sack.
  • Larozar finished with a game-high 110 rushing yards on 19 carries before exiting the game late. Trey Montour caught eight passes for 100 yards, while Viotto completed 21 of 30 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
  • The teams combined for three safeties in a defensive battle that saw Regina finish with 260 yards of total offence compared to 230 for UBC.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
  • The Rams will close out their Canada West regular season next week against Manitoba in a game that will determine whether Regina qualifies for the postseason.
  • A Regina victory over Manitoba would guarantee the Rams a playoff berth. They would finish third unless Calgary wins both of its remaining games against Manitoba and Alberta, in which case Regina would finish fourth.
  • If the Rams lose to Manitoba, they would finish fifth and miss the playoffs unless Calgary loses both of its remaining games. In that scenario, Regina would finish fourth and qualify for the postseason.
