Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars hold off Lethbridge for 74-68 road win

Mather's double-double helps U of R to weekend split with Pronghorns

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina's men's basketball team earned its first Canada West victory of the season on Saturday night, holding off a late Lethbridge comeback to defeat the Pronghorns 74-68 at the Co-op Centre for Sport & Wellness in Lethbridge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams traded leads throughout a tightly contested opening quarter. Regina connected on four of its six three-point attempts, including triples from Drew Ackerman, Sufyan Elkannan, Isaiah Bay, and Cade Mather, but Lethbridge got nine points from Joseph Lemieux to take a 22-20 lead after 10 minutes.
  • The lead continued to change hands in the second quarter before Regina began to establish control. The Cougars went ahead 33-30 on a pair of Osagie Okundaye free throws midway through the period, but the Pronghorns battled back to tie the game at 37-37 with just over a minute remaining. Mather answered with a layup before Sina Ayerman knocked down a three-pointer in the closing seconds to give Regina a 42-37 advantage at halftime.
  • Regina carried that momentum into the third quarter, opening the second half with consecutive baskets from Bay and Elkannan to extend its lead to nine. The Cougars eventually went ahead by as many as 10 points, first taking a 48-38 lead on a pair of Isaac Kiona free throws and later matching that margin on two occasions. Lethbridge trimmed the deficit late in the period, but Regina took a 58-52 lead into the fourth.
  • The Pronghorns continued to chip away at the lead in the final quarter, eventually tying the game at 61-61 with just over six minutes remaining. Bay responded with a three-pointer to put Regina back in front and followed with another basket to make it 66-61, but Lethbridge answered with five consecutive points to tie the game again at 66-66.
  • The teams traded baskets before a layup by Ackerman with just over two minutes remaining gave Regina a 70-68 lead. Neither team scored again until Mather converted a layup with 23 seconds left to extend the advantage to four. Elkannan then hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the six-point victory.
