Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams punch ticket to postseason with 26-15 win over Manitoba

U of R finishes third in conference; will play at Saskatchewan in Saturday semifinal

QUICKLY
  • Carter Ashman piled up 258 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns as the University of Regina Rams booked their trip to the Canada West playoffs with a 26-15 victory over Manitoba on Saturday afternoon at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams put together an impressive opening drive, marching 82 yards on 10 plays and taking more than six minutes off the clock before Ashman finished the possession with a four-yard touchdown run. Manitoba got on the board with a safety later in the first quarter, but the Rams carried a 7-2 lead into the second.
  • Ty Gorniak extended Regina's advantage with field goals from 43 and 39 yards in the second quarter, giving the Rams a 13-2 lead at halftime. The Regina defence and special teams also came up with several important plays before the break. Liam LaBelle forced a fumble that Jacob Tkachuk recovered, while the Rams blocked a Manitoba field goal attempt on the final play of the half.
  • Manitoba opened the third quarter with a lengthy drive into Regina territory, but the Rams came up with another blocked field goal to keep the Bisons off the scoreboard. Regina took advantage on its ensuing possession, covering 85 yards in six plays. Ashman capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run, his second of the afternoon, to give the Rams a commanding 20-2 lead.
  • The Bisons responded with two consecutive touchdowns to make things interesting. Cole Anseeuw connected with Nathan Udoh for a 25-yard major late in the third quarter, then found Mikun Odunuga for a 10-yard touchdown early in the fourth. The second score pulled Manitoba to within five points at 20-15.
  • Regina's defence came up with a crucial stop after Manitoba intercepted a pass early in the fourth quarter. The Bisons moved into Rams territory, but Carson Sombach dropped Odunuga for a one-yard loss on third down to turn the ball over on downs. Ashman immediately broke loose for a 38-yard run, setting up Gorniak's 27-yard field goal that restored an eight-point advantage.
  • The Rams forced Manitoba to punt on its next two possessions, then put the game away with a drive that featured six consecutive Ashman carries. Gorniak connected from 22 yards with 31 seconds remaining to seal the 26-15 victory and send Regina into the postseason.

GAME NOTES
  • Ashman finished with 174 rushing yards on 29 carries and added four receptions for 84 yards. His 258 all-purpose yards rank seventh on the Rams' single-game list and are the most by a U of R player since Kyle Borsa had 294 at Manitoba on Sept. 29, 2018.
  • Gorniak made four of his five field goal attempts, connecting from 43, 39, 27, and 22 yards. He finishes the regular season with 23 field goals, breaking Perri Scarcelli's previous U of R single-season record of 20 set in 2009. Gorniak also scored 14 points in the victory, bringing his season total to a school-record 89.
  • Owen Sieben completed 15 of his 19 pass attempts for 208 yards, good for a 78.9% completion rate.
  • Regina blocked two Manitoba field goal attempts, including one on the final play of the first half. Liam LaBelle and Jacob Tkachuk were both credited with fumble recoveries.
  • Brad Rodin and Mike Zalaski combined on a sack.
  • Four of Regina's five starting defensive backs recorded a pass breakup, with Chase Murray, Max Polischuk, Jacob Tkachuk, and Carson Sombach each credited with one.
  • Owen Zimmer led Regina with six tackles, while Colin McKellar added 5.5 and Liam LaBelle finished with five.
  • The Rams finish the regular season with a 4-4 record and claim third place in Canada West. Manitoba also finishes at 4-4 but takes fourth place after Regina completed a season sweep of the Bisons.

PLAYOFFS SORTED
