Game Recap: Rams Football |

Rams knock off Saskatchewan 39-27, advance to third straight BioSteel Hardy Cup

Six takeaways, three Sieben touchdown passes lift U of R to road semifinal victory

QUICKLY
  • The University of Regina Rams are headed to the Hardy Cup for the third consecutive season after defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 39-27 in a Canada West semifinal on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
  • The Rams forced six turnovers, got three touchdown passes from Owen Sieben, and rode a 139-yard rushing performance from Carter Ashman to eliminate the Huskies and advance to next weekend's conference championship game at UBC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saskatchewan opened the scoring with a 34-yard field goal by James Keane, but the Rams answered with two field goals from Ty Gorniak later in the first quarter. Tyleon Ocaya's interception and 54-yard return set up Gorniak's first field goal from 30 yards out, while a fumble recovery by Brad Rodin following a forced fumble by Bennett Andersen gave the U of R another short field. Gorniak connected from 41 yards to give the Rams a 6-3 lead after the opening quarter.
  • The Rams took control with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Max Polischuk intercepted Saskatchewan quarterback Anton Amundrud early in the period, and Sieben finished the ensuing 70-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Nicholas Sirleaf. A bad snap on the conversion attempt kept the score at 12-3.
  • Ashman delivered the biggest offensive play of the game midway through the quarter, breaking free for a 63-yard touchdown run that pushed the U of R's lead to 19-3. The Rams struck again just over three minutes later when Sieben connected with Adley Mayala for a 21-yard touchdown, extending the advantage to 26-3.
  • Saskatchewan responded with a six-yard touchdown pass from Amundrud to Lukas Scott in the final minute of the half, but the Rams carried a 26-10 lead into the break.
  • The U of R defence came up with another big play early in the third quarter. Chase Murray intercepted Amundrud and returned the ball 41 yards to the Saskatchewan 14-yard line, setting up a touchdown pass from Sieben to Michael Eagle Bear on the very next play. The score gave the Rams a 33-10 lead.
  • Saskatchewan answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Rhett Vavra later in the third quarter, then pulled within 10 points when Amundrud connected with Thomas Jule for a five-yard touchdown early in the fourth. The Huskies continued to chip away, getting a 35-yard field goal from Keane with 8:47 remaining to cut Regina's lead to 33-27.
  • The Rams responded with a crucial eight-play drive that took more than four minutes off the clock. Gorniak finished the possession with a 41-yard field goal, giving the U of R a nine-point cushion with 4:26 remaining.
  • Kaeden Brennan then came up with the Rams' fourth interception of the night, returning the ball five yards to midfield. Regina turned the takeaway into another Gorniak field goal, this one from 34 yards, to extend the lead to 39-27 with 2:26 left.
  • Saskatchewan threatened again on its final possession, but the Rams held on to secure the 12-point victory and another trip to the Hardy Cup.

GAME NOTES
  • Sieben completed 14 of his 26 pass attempts for 216 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Ashman finished with 139 rushing yards on 16 carries. He also caught four passes for 20 yards, giving him 159 yards from scrimmage.
  • Ashman's 63-yard touchdown run was the longest rushing play in U of R postseason history and tied for the eighth-longest run in program history.
  • Gorniak was perfect on all four of his field goal attempts, connecting from 30, 41, 41, and 34 yards. He also made all three of his convert attempts and finished with 15 points.
  • Owen Zimmer led the U of R defence with 8.5 tackles, including six solo tackles and five assisted tackles.
  • Saskatchewan quarterback Anton Amundrud completed 30 of 49 passes for 387 yards and three touchdowns, but was intercepted four times. Rhett Vavra led the Huskies with nine receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown.
  • Saskatchewan outgained the Rams 449-378 in total offence, but the U of R held the Huskies to just 47 rushing yards.

NEXT UP
  • The Rams will travel to Vancouver to face UBC in the Hardy Cup next Saturday. The winner will advance to the Uteck Bowl, which will be hosted by either Laval or Montreal.
