Cougars fall to Fraser Valley in Canada West play-in game

Kenyi, Kamba both score 16 for Regina in setback

The No. 6 seed Fraser Valley Cascades advanced to the Canada West quarterfinals with a 73-67 win over the No. 11 seed Regina Cougars on Friday at Saville Community Sports Centre at the University of Alberta.

Tied 65-65 late in the fourth quarter, Fraser Valley closed the game on an 8-2 run and will face the No. 3-seeded Alberta Golden Bears in Saturday afternoon's quarterfinal.

The play-in game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team leading by more than eight points. Fraser Valley led for much of the contest, which featured five lead changes and eight ties.

Bennett O'Connor scored a game-high 22 points for Fraser Valley, going 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. He added four rebounds and three assists. Dilveer Randhawa finished with 13 points, while Ismael Hernandez added 12.

Lodie Kenyi led Regina with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. Ben Kamba also scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Kaz Dornstauder chipped in 10 points and a team-high nine boards.

The second quarter saw five lead changes. Randhawa scored five points during a Fraser Valley run, but Regina responded midway through the frame, with Dornstauder tying the game at 30-30. A late jumper by O'Connor helped Fraser Valley take a 40-38 lead into halftime.

The teams traded baskets early in the third quarter before Fraser Valley pulled ahead behind baskets from Hernandez and free throws from O'Connor to lead 57-52 after three.

In the fourth, Regina rallied to tie the game at 65-65. O'Connor scored six points at the free-throw line in the final three minutes to seal the win.
