The University of Regina's women's basketball team led from wire to wire in a 74-48 victory over UBC Okanagan on Saturday night in a Canada West quarterfinal game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Cara Misskey filled the stats sheet with 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and five steals for the Cougars, who will advance to play either UBC on the road or Alberta at home next weekend in the Canada West semifinals.
"I'm extremely impressed with our team's readiness," Cougars interim head coach
Michaela Kleisinger said. "We watched (Kanani Coon) and (Sydney Lewis) both have big games for UBCO yesterday and we knew we needed to make them uncomfortable. I thought we executed our plan extremely well tonight."
Rachel Vanderhooft had the game's lone double-double for Regina, finishing with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Jade Belmore added 18 points, fell just short of a double-double with nine rebounds, and also had four steals.
Kiana Kaczur led UBC Okanagan with 12 points while Coon finished with 10 and Lewis scored eight. Lewis, Temi Aina, and Tennyson McCarthy all had six rebounds for the Heat, who entered the Canada West postseason as the conference's No. 5 seed after going 10-10 during the conference schedule.
The Cougars got off to a quick start as they employed a press that UBC Okanagan struggled to break on multiple occasions. Regina led 23-13 after the opening quarter and 39-25 at halftime, but the Cougars put it away with a huge run after the break. Aiko Williams hit a three-pointer 1:50 into the third, but that turned out to be UBCO's final field goal of the quarter as the Cougars closed the period on a 22-2 run to all but seal the win.
The Cougars will now watch Sunday's out-of-town scoreboard with interest as Alberta and UBC battle in an afternoon quarterfinal. A win by the Pandas will send them to Regina next weekend to take on the Cougars next Friday, while a victory by UBC will set up a Cougars/Thunderbirds matchup in Vancouver. The winner of that semifinal will not only advance to the Canada West championship game, but will also earn one of the conference's two automatic berths to the U SPORTS Final 8 hosted by Université Laval.
