Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars celebrate Senior Night with win over Huskies

One more win needed to clinch return to the Canada West playoffs

QUICKLY
The University of Regina's men's basketball team completed a home-and-home sweep over the Saskatchewan Huskies with a 79-58 victory on Tuesday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Saskatchewan used an early 10-0 run to go up 21-11 in the opening minute of the second quarter, but the Cougars replied with a big push before halftime. Regina outscored the Huskies by a 27-15 margin in the second quarter, helping the home team take a 38-34 lead into the break.
  • The Huskies briefly took a pair of leads in the third, but it was all Regina after that. The Cougars went on an 18-3 run - with the final seven points all scored by Sufyan Elkannan - which put Regina up 60-46 late in the period. Regina continued the push in the final quarter, outscoring Saskatchewan 19-10 in the fourth to cement the win on Senior Night.
  • Ben Kamba was 9-for-15 from the field and scored a game-high 19 points for Regina. Elkannan finished with 16 points, while Gurech Gurech scored 11. Kaz Dornstauder had a team-leading eight rebounds.
  • Mohamed Mahadhi led Saskatchewan with 15 points.
  • The Cougars honoured graduating players Dornstauder, Zachary Hillis, Kamba, Lodie Kenyi, and Cade Mather prior to the win.

PRAIRIE DIVISION UPDATE
  • The Cougars (7-11) drew closer to locking up one of the final two Prairie Division playoff berths still available. They now need just one win in two games over MacEwan next weekend, or one Lethbridge loss at Alberta, to return to the postseason.
  • Regina could also climb to sixth place in the Prairie Division, but would need a pair of wins over MacEwan combined with two losses by Brandon (8-12) to Manitoba.
  • The loss eliminates Saskatchewan (5-13) from the Canada West postseason race.

NEXT UP
  • The Cougars will travel to Edmonton next weekend to square off with MacEwan on Friday (7:00 PM) and Saturday (5:00 PM) in what will be the final Canada West games of the season for both teams.
