Derek Lamer joined the University of Regina’s coaching staff as a linebackers coach prior to the 2016 season.
During Lamer's long tenure with the Rams, the team has had three linebackers selected in the CFL Draft including Robbie Lowes in 2021 by Winnipeg, Ryder Varga in 2022 by BC, and Josh White in 2023 by Ottawa. Varga, a two-time Canada West all-star, capped his sensational Rams career by being named a first-team All-Canadian and the Canada West Defensive Player of the Year in 2022. Under Lamer's direction, Danny Nesbitt also earned Canada West all-star honours following the 2017 campaign.
Lamer also has extensive coaching experience at the Regina Minor Football and high school levels in addition to spending six seasons with the Regina Thunder as a linebackers coach – and, in 2014, as the Thunder’s defensive coordinator. From 2003 to 2008, Lamer was a coach on both sides of the ball at Michael A. Riffel High School, helping guide the Royals to five city championships and two provincial titles. He also coached at Robert Usher Collegiate from 1994 to 2001.
He also has experience at the provincial level with Team Saskatchewan in 2008 and 2009, and recently served as defensive coordinator for the South Sask Selects in 2014 and 2015.
Lamer is a sergeant employed with the Regina Police Service.
