Sheldon Gray was added to the Rams' coaching staff as a defensive backs coach prior to the 2015 season and was announced as the team's defensive coordinator in early 2016.
Gray's defence has produced four U SPORTS All-Canadians including Anthony Bennett, Jaxon Ford, Tanner Schmekel, and Ryder Varga. It has also featured six CFL Draft selections (Bennett, Ford, Robbie Lowes, Schmekel, Jackson Sombach, and Varga) along with the 2016 Canada West Rookie of the Year (Nicholas Dheilly) and the 2022 Canada West Defensive Player of the Year (Varga). During Gray's tenure, the Rams have had a total of 11 Canada West all-stars on the defensive side of the ball.
Prior to joining the Rams, Gray coached for two seasons with the Regina Thunder. He also gained experience at the high school level in Regina with both LeBoldus and Miller and at the provincial level with Team Saskatchewan.
Gray's playing career saw him suit up for the University of Regina from 1999 to 2003, the Rams' first five seasons at the U SPORTS level. A defensive back, Gray helped the Rams win both a Canada West championship and an Atlantic Bowl title on their way to a Vanier Cup appearance in 2000. He had an 83-yard interception return that year, which stood as the longest in school history until it was finally broken nearly a decade later.
Gray and his wife Michelle live in Regina with their twins, son Emerson and daughter Alexa. He received his Bachelor of Education from the U of R in 2004 and has almost two decades of experience as a chemistry and science teacher with the Regina Catholic School District.
