Sheila Beckie

  • Title
    Women's Basketball Head Coach
• University of Regina Sports Hall of Fame (Class of 2003)

Sheila Beckie took over as the head coach of the U of R's women's basketball team in 1982. While the Cougars hadn't made the playoffs in three consecutive seasons and Beckie was the team's fourth coach in as many years, she brought stability and success and laid the groundwork for what would become one of the strongest women's basketball programs in the nation.

Beckie’s last season of coaching featured her most successful team. The Cougars, who were led offensively by Jackie Moore and Vivian Kingdon, brought home their first conference championship and were the fifth-place finishers at the 1989 CIAU Championship in Sudbury, Ont.

Moore earned All-Canadian status in 1989, becoming just the second Cougar in program history to earn that distinction. Moore, Kingdon, Annette Pfeifer, and Shari Wilson were all named GPAC all-stars during Beckie's tenure, while Mary Lou Tourigny (1985) and Deanne Shmyr (1989) were both named the GPAC Rookie of the Year.

Beckie was inducted into the University of Regina Sports Hall of Fame in the Builders category in 2003.
